Adaeze was the only daughter of Mama Chinyere, a widow who had struggled her whole life to raise her. But Adaeze was stubborn. She hated being told what to do, especially by her mother.
> "You talk too much, Mama! I am old enough to make my own choices!"
Mama Chinyere sighed. "Ada, a child who ignores warnings will walk into danger."
One evening, as the sun dipped behind the hills, a wealthy trader visited their village. He was a tall man with smooth skin, always dressed in fine clothes. No one knew where he came from, but he had a voice like honey and a smile that made even the elders uneasy.
> "I am looking for a beautiful wife," he announced.
Adaeze was immediately drawn to him. His gold bracelets shone in the fading sunlight, and his promises of a life of luxury filled her with excitement.
> "Mama, I will marry him!" she declared.
Mama Chinyere’s heart clenched. “No, my daughter. There is something wrong about him. He is not a man you should follow.”
But Adaeze refused to listen.
That night, she packed her few belongings and ran away with the stranger.
The journey was long, deeper into the forest than she had ever been. The trees grew taller, the air heavier, and a strange silence settled around them.
> "Where are we going?" Adaeze finally asked.
The man turned to her, and for the first time, she noticed—his smile was too wide. His teeth are too sharp. His eyes… empty.
> "Home," he whispered.
Then Adaeze saw it—bones scattered along the path. Jewelry still clinging to rotting fingers. The remains of others who had walked this road before her.
Fear gripped her heart. She turned to run, but his hand shot out, gripping her wrist like iron.
> "Didn’t your mother warn you?" he murmured.
Adaeze screamed.
The trees swallowed the sound.
And back in the village, Mama Chinyere woke up with tears in her eyes—because she already knew.
Her daughter was never coming home.
