I was pregnant and I did not know who the Father was.
How IT STARTED
My name is Chioma. I was only nineteen when I left the village to live with my elder sister, Ada, and her husband, Brother Emeka, in the city.
They had no child of their own, so they adopted a little boy called Junior five years earlier. He was about 6 years of age
Sister Ada loved him like her own soul. Even at that age, Junior would cl|mb onto Sister Ada’s l@p pu|| at her b|0u§£, and beg to be br£@stf£d.
She never refused. “My poor baby,” she would whisper. “He doesn’t know any better.”
She b@th£d the baby herself, singing lullabies while she loosthed dirt from the baby's tiny body. Sometimes §h£ b@th£d with h|m.
Because the house had only two bedrooms, I shared the small room with Junior.
I slept on a mattress on the floor; he slept on the bed with his teddy. I never thought anything could go wrong.
Until the mornings became a nightmare.
The first time, I woke up feeling w@t£r b£tw££n my l£g§. I sat up slowly, heart already beating fast.
I t0uch£d it and it was §p£řm.
I cl£@n£d everything quickly before Junior woke up. Maybe it was hormonal imbalance.
But it kept happening.
Every few nights, I would wake up to the same thing.
I started staying awake, eyes open in the dark, but I never saw anything.
One morning, after the fifth time, I couldn’t take it anymore. I ran to Sister Ada in tears.
“Sister, please, something terrible is happening,” I cried. “I keep waking up with… with §p£řm§ |n§|d£ me. I swear I’ve never b££n with anyone.”
“Chioma, what kind of evil lie is this?” she shouted.
“I don’t know how, Sister! But it’s happening!”
Her eyes turned cold. “The only man in this house is my husband. Are you accusing Emeka?”
“No! Sister, I would never—”
“Then who?” she screamed. “You think I’m a f00l? You go out, sl££p with people, then bring this shame here?”
“I never leave this house without you knowing!”
She shook her head. “If this continues, I will send you back to the village in disgrace.”
I left her room broken.
That night, I lay awake again, watching Junior. He looked so small, so innocent.
I remembered how he sometimes crawled onto my mattress, saying, “Aunty Chioma, I’m scared of the dark.”
I always let him. I felt sorry for him that I'll be leaving soon because my Elder refused to talk to her husband.
The worse was yet to come.
A few days later, I missed my period.
