Good news: it’s completely normal.
✅ Why Babies Smile in Their Sleep
1. Brain Development (Reflex Smiles)
Newborns smile automatically during certain sleep stages.
This is called a reflex smile, not an emotional smile.
2. Dreaming (REM Sleep)
As babies grow, their brains become more active during sleep.
They may smile, laugh, or make cute expressions.
3. Gas Movement
Sometimes tiny smiles happen because of internal sensations like gas moving around.
4. Comfort and Safety
If the baby feels warm, full, and comfortable, they may relax deeply leading to sleep smiles.
🟢 When It’s Normal
Everything is fine if:
• Baby smiles briefly
• Baby sleeps peacefully afterwards
• No strange body movements
• Baby feeds and behaves normally
🔴 When to Worry
Seek medical help if:
• Smiling comes with stiff limbs
• Baby has shaking that lasts long
• Baby is hard to wake
• Baby has fever or breathing problems
